“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”
Hellen Keller, Author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer.
Welcome to THE UPSIDE DOWN! The MIMA School of Art & Design’s 2021 BA Graduate Degree Show.
Here you will find the exceptional work of over 70 students spanning the creative disciplines of Fine Art, Fashion, Interiors, Product Design and Graphics & Illustration, all created against the backdrop of one of the most challenging and disruptive periods in our living memory.
The Upside Down reflects the discombobulating and tumultuous life we’ve all been living over the last 18 months, the broader socio-political, environmental and economic times we are entering and, most importantly of all, focuses on the ideas and aesthetics of a new generation of creative minds that will mesh and forge the ideas of the future.
Teesside University has been actively engaged in creative education for over 50 years with a special focus on the connection between art and industry. State-of-the art technology, workshops and labs enable our ideas to become reality. Our alumni are audacious, experimental and independent creatives. Whatever a student’s starting position, all are welcome to be part of art and designs’ contribution to our changing world and to create the extraordinary.
At the heart of the learning community is our nationally respected gallery MIMA, a cultural hub and creative resource. From climate change to social inequality, healthcare to housing, artists, fashion, interiors, graphics and product designers apply their skills to address critical issues of our time. Through working with professionals in the field, we prepare our students to stand out and make a difference in the working world.
