My project is to explore the traditional Chinese Izakaya bar and to make a contemporary version for a modern audience. These types of bars traditionally serve beer and small plates of complimentary food snacks. Building on the popularity of the traditional style, my aim was to create a series of spaces in which socialising is the key element. It was important to create a number of different functions for the building, such as areas which simply provide drinks and refreshments but also spaces in which customers can enjoy food from the kitchen. My selected materials palette was wood, glass and light reflection to make the indoor environment reflect the old style of the bar, but to bring it into the twenty first century.
